Jason Wang Brings Artistry, Achievement, and Community Spirit to Boston Music Project
Since joining the Boston Music Project (BMP) in August 2024, violist and educator Jason Wang has become a key figure in Boston’s expanding arts education network. As a Teaching Artist and Interim Ensemble Director with the Newbold Orchestra at Josiah Quincy Elementary School, Wang merges artistry, pedagogy, and community connection in ways that continue to enrich both students and audiences across the city.
The Newbold Orchestra — the most advanced of BMP’s 33 ensembles across eight program sites — stands as a symbol of musical excellence and inclusivity. Out of more than 87 applicants from the Greater Boston area, only a handful were selected as ensemble directors. Wang’s appointment reflects his strong leadership, technical expertise, and vision for transforming the learning experience through creativity and collaboration.

Students describe his lessons as energetic and inspiring, while colleagues note his rare balance of rigor, empathy, and artistry.
Beneath his calm and creative leadership lies a foundation of discipline and resilience shaped by his upbringing. Raised in a soldier family and having served in the Marine Corps of Taiwan, Wang brings a quiet strength and sense of duty to his work as an educator and artist. The values of precision, perseverance, and teamwork he learned in the military now resonate in his rehearsal room—where he encourages students to listen closely, work collaboratively, and take pride in every detail of their craft.

Beyond the classroom, Wang is known for his national reach as an educator. He currently teaches students across seven major cities and multiple time zones through an online studio format, allowing young musicians nationwide to benefit from his guidance. His students’ accomplishments speak volumes about his teaching impact:
• Isabella, one of Wang’s students in Florida, has earned back-to-back Superior (S) ratings from the Florida Orchestra Association for her Solo Ensemble performances at the University of West Florida. She also advanced through competitive auditions to perform in the All-County Orchestra, an achievement that highlights her technical growth and musical maturity under Wang’s mentorship.
• Charlie, another of Wang’s students, successfully passed the audition for the Grand Prairie Fine Arts Academy in Texas and currently performs in the Middle School All-Region Orchestra — a testament to his steady progress and disciplined preparation.

Wang’s dedication extends well beyond private instruction. He has guided students through dozens of recitals, chamber concerts, and ensemble performances, helping them build not only confidence but also a deep appreciation for collaborative musicianship. Many of his students describe his coaching as transformative, blending performance excellence with personal growth.
In addition to his teaching work, Wang remains deeply active in performance and outreach. He has represented BMP at public events such as the Instrument Petting Zoo at the Boston Children’s Museum, Boston Common, and Seaport Common, where he introduces hundreds of children and families to orchestral instruments in a hands-on, engaging way.

His dedication to musical outreach also extends beyond Boston. During his tenure in Pittsburgh, Wang served as a teaching artist for UniSound’s Musical Instrument Petting Zoos, where his educational approach left a lasting impression. As Emily Bovan, Program Manager at UniSound, wrote, “Jason’s ability to connect with young learners and inspire curiosity and joy in music education has left a lasting impression on our organization and community.” She further noted that his presence “elevated these events from simple hands-on experiences to impactful educational moments.”

Alongside his teaching, Wang continues to maintain a robust orchestral performance career. In 2024, he performed regularly with both the Portland Symphony Orchestra and the Eastern Connecticut Symphony Orchestra, balancing an intensive teaching schedule with ongoing professional engagements. His orchestral experience began during his graduate studies at Carnegie Mellon University, where he freelanced with six regional orchestras, including the Butler County Symphony Orchestra, Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Altoona Symphony Orchestra, and Youngstown Symphony Orchestra.

Wang’s versatility is further reflected in his participation at renowned festivals and performances. He attended the Mostly Modern Festival in Saratoga Springs, NY (June 2024), an event devoted to contemporary works by living composers, where his internship covered full tuition. Previous highlights include performing in the U.S. premiere of Moorland Elegies by Tõnu Kõrvits at Carnegie Hall in 2019 and the Concierto Navideño at Gran Teatro Nacional in Lima, Peru, in 2015.
This season, Wang will conduct BMP’s annual Block Parties, large-scale concerts uniting more than 200 young musicians from across all eight BMP sites. Due to the scale of collaboration between sites and ongoing city scheduling, the venue and date are to be announced. However, the event is expected to take place on June 7, 2025, in an outdoor setting reminiscent of the Rose Kennedy Greenway—a space filled with sunshine, community spirit, and live music performed by BMP’s young artists. The Block Party embodies BMP’s mission to make music a public, shared celebration of creativity and connection across Boston.
